The apparent reason behind Trump’s immigration ban from 7 Muslim countries – Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen – is to keep the US safe from ‘potential immigrants’ who might be terrorists. The US already had the most “extreme vetting” of refugees and immigrants on earth lasting up to two years and there have been 0 cases of vetted refugees engaging in acts of terror. Refugees only come here for a better life, just like the how first settlers came from Great Britain to America looking for a fresh start.
0ver 50,000 of the best and brightest students come from Iran to study in US universities will now look elsewhere to further their studies. Such students have helped build bridges of understanding and brought in millions of dollars in revenue for US universities. Iran has a population nearly as large as Germany’s and is a virtually untapped market from which Trump is cutting American businesses off.
And lets not even start with the 200,000 Iraqi-Americans that would not even be refugees in the first place had it not been for the illegal war launched on them by the US? How will the US contribute, as it pledged, to the rebuilding of Iraq after all the destruction its rampaging caused if Iraqis cannot even come to the US to do business?
The picture below depicts the banned countries in red and the yellow countries as countries that Trump has investments in. See a connection?
A true ban would include Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, Nigeria, France, and several other countries from which people abused the visa system to attempt/carry out acts of terror. And if the argument is that these 7 countries are violent, then what about South Sudan, Ukraine, Colombia, Venezuela, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Central African Republic? These countries are among the lowest ranked in the Global Peace Index. Want to know what the difference is? Religion. The 7 Trump-designated countries are all Muslim-majority. This ban stokes xenophobia for domestic political gain while disguised as counterterrorism policy
Trump’s Visa Ban is about anti-Muslim Bigotry, not Security.
This ban will not increase US security. If the US government wants to increase US security then they need to look at the facts – terrorism by Muslims makes up one-third of 1% of all murders in the US.
All this ban will do is provide a false sense of security.
