This is a familiar scenario for many. You are sitting on a plane and suddenly you smell the fragrance of roast chicken coming from the back of the plane. It’s time to eat!

Others may find the thought of microwave meals served with cold bread unappetizing.

But most of us happily chow it down! It’s food right? Just say Alhamdulillah and eat it!

At one point or another in your life you’ve probably had a meal on an airplane. Many airlines only serve halal meat while other airlines offer halal options if you give them some advance notice.

Islam is a complete way of life and teaches us the proper rules of eating and drinking. The Prophet (S) asked the companions to wash their hands before and after eating, to start eating with the praise of Allah, to eat using the right hand, not to eat until they felt hungry, and not to eat and drink excessively. Eating elevates to an act of worship when performed according to the Islamic guidelines.

The Prophet (S) also made it a point for us to never criticize any food.

“The Prophet (PBUH) never criticized any food (he was invited to) but he used to eat it if he liked the food, and leave it if he disliked it.” – Sahih Bukhari

So in respect, we will only point out the good we have noticed while aboard 30+ different airlines across the world. Also note that all comments are based on the food served in economy class.

In our opinion, the two airlines with the best halal food are Emirates and Turkish Airlines.

Let’s start with Emirates. One thing we love about Emirates is that right when you board the plane you are given a menu with the choices available for that flight.

Emirates has over 20 different kinds of dishes and rotates them as needed. The amount of time and preparation for each meal is amazing! Having high quality meals for thousands of passengers daily is a huge task. In fact, Dubai has the world’s largest meal preparation facility in the world and you can see how 38 million meals are prepared every year here.

Also when you board the plane you are given these stickers, one of which says ‘Wake me up for food.” Trust us, you will want to wake up!

We’ve posted some images of Emirates meals below. We’re not the best food photographers, but all of these meals were delicious! And after watching the video mentioned above, you really appreciate all the time and effort that goes into making these meals. Here are some some of the dishes we have tried on Emirates so far:

Now for Turkish Airlines. Turkish Airlines has a professional halal chef aboard each long-haul flight! Each chef ensures the quality of each meal.

We had the BEST kebab not in Turkey but on a Turkish airlines flight! Here are some pictures from our meals:

If you are still uneasy about airplane food, think of it this way – you are being served like a king as you eat a 3 course meal while you’re flying 45,000 feet in the air. Let us repeat that… while flying in the air! Alhamdulillah for such blessings!
